Robot End-of-Arm Gripper Assembly for a Pick-and-Place Cell

A complete end-of-arm tool machined, anodized and assembled as one deliverable: pocketed base plate, anodized manifold, stainless guide fingers and urethane contact pads, checked as an assembly against the robot flange pattern.

Project Overview

What The Project Asked For

An automation integrator needed an end-of-arm tool for a pick-and-place cell. The tool combines a pocketed aluminum base plate, an anodized manifold block, stainless guide rails with paired finger blades and urethane pads where the product is touched. It bolts to a standard robot tool flange.

Rather than receiving loose parts, the customer wanted the tool delivered assembled and checked, with the pad and finger positions verified against the base plate mounting pattern that the robot repeats every cycle.

The plate and manifold were milled, fit features were machined to a pre-anodizing size, and the assembly was measured on the granite plate after it was bolted together.

Challenge To Result

How This Project Ran

What the drawing asked for, how the part was machined and inspected, and what was shipped at the end.

The Challenge

The positions that matter on a gripper are the pad and finger positions relative to the flange pattern, and those are produced by several parts bolted together rather than by one machined part. Anodizing the base plate and manifold changes the fit of every dowel and pocket, and a tool assembled from individually correct parts can still locate wrong.

What We Did

The base plate pockets and the flange pattern were milled in one setup so they share a datum. Fit features on the anodized parts were machined to pre-coating sizes and re-checked after coating. The stainless fingers and manifold were made on the same work order, and the tool was assembled here, adjusted, and measured as a unit on the granite plate with a height gauge from the flange face before packing.

Result

The tool was mounted on the robot flange without hand fitting, and pad and finger positions measured after assembly were within the drawing requirement. The assembly was delivered with its own inspection record.
