What This Service Covers
The parts, materials, and tolerances we run under Custom CNC Machining Services, and where the process fits alongside the rest of the shop.
Custom CNC machining covers the parts that do not come out of a catalogue: a housing with a sealing groove, a die insert with a 0.3 mm blade, a shaft that has to run true in an assembly you already built. We work from your drawing rather than from a standard product list.
Four processes run under one roof. Vertical machining centers cut the housings, plates, brackets and contoured parts. Turning covers shafts, flanges, bushings and rings. Wire EDM cuts the profiles a cutter cannot reach — square internal corners, thin blades, hardened steel. Jigs and fixtures are made in the same shop, which is why repeat batches hold position instead of drifting.
Most of what we quote is low to medium volume: one to twenty pieces for a build, fifty to five hundred for a production release. Parts arrive as 2D drawings, STEP files, or both. Where the two disagree, we ask before we cut.
Before quoting, a sales engineer reads the drawing for the things that change price: a tolerance that forces a second setup, a pocket depth that needs a long-reach tool, a finish called out after a fit dimension. You get those notes with the quote, not after the first article fails.
Material is your call. We machine aluminum, stainless, tool steel, carbon steel and engineering plastics as standard. Tell us the grade and the condition — annealed, pre-hardened, or hardened before wire EDM — because it changes both the route and the price.
Working Range And Typical Tolerances
Confirmed figures only. Anything your drawing needs beyond these is a conversation, not a refusal.
| Capability | Range Or Value |
|---|---|
| Processes in house | CNC milling, CNC turning, wire EDM, jig and fixture build |
| Multi-process parts | Mill + wire EDM and mill + turn routed on one work order, one inspection report |
| Typical order size | 1–20 pieces for builds, 50–500 pieces for production releases |
| Files accepted | STEP, IGES, X_T, DWG, DXF, PDF |
| General tolerance unless drawn otherwise | ISO 2768-m (medium) |
| Tightest tolerance on production parts | ±0.01 mm on selected features, material and geometry permitting |
| Surface finish as machined | Ra 1.6 standard; Ra 0.8 on finish faces |
| Quote turnaround | Within 24 hours on business days |
Send The Drawing Anyway
The table lists what we run every week, not the limit of what we can do. If your part is larger, tighter, or in a material not listed, Owen checks it against the machines and the inspection kit and tells you plainly whether it fits, within 24 hours on business days.

Every Quote Comes With DFM Notes
Owen reads the drawing before pricing it: tolerances that add cost, features that need a second setup, finishes that change lead time. Send a STEP or PDF with the material and quantity, and the quote reflects what is actually machinable, within 24 hours on business days.
What We Check On Custom CNC Machining Services Parts

Every job gets a first article checked against the drawing before the batch runs. What we measure depends on the part: a sealed housing gets flatness and groove depth, a wire-cut insert gets slot width and pitch, a turned shaft gets diameter and runout.

The first piece off each new setup is measured against every dimensioned feature on the drawing before the rest of the batch runs.

Length, width, thickness, bore and step dimensions checked at the machine and again before packing.

Step heights, hole positions and parallelism referenced from a ground datum face using a TESA micro-hite 600.
Small profiles, slot widths and hole positions too fine for hand tools are measured optically on a Rational VMS-3626.

Questions Engineers Ask Before They Send A Drawing
If yours is not here, ask Owen directly. A one line question on WhatsApp is fine.
Chat With OwenWhat do you need from me before you can quote?
A 3D file, a 2D drawing with tolerances, the material and grade, the quantity, and the finish. If you only have a 3D model, say which dimensions are critical. We will not guess a tolerance and then charge you for it.
My 2D drawing and my STEP file do not match. Which do you follow?
We stop and ask. The 2D drawing with the tolerance callouts usually governs, but a silent decision on our side is how a batch gets scrapped. Expect an email listing the conflicts before the quote goes out.
Which features on my drawing are actually driving the price?
Usually three: the tightest tolerance, the number of setups, and the deepest pocket relative to its width. A single ±0.01 mm callout on a face that could be ±0.05 mm can add a grinding or second-op step. We flag these in the quote so you can decide whether to open the tolerance.
Can you machine parts that need both milling and wire EDM?
Yes, and it is most of what we do on tooling parts. The usual route is rough mill, heat treat if the drawing calls for it, then wire cut the profile, so the hardening distortion is removed by the last operation rather than left in the part.
I am moving this part from another supplier. What do you need?
The drawing, the last inspection report you accepted, and one physical sample if you have one. The report tells us where the previous supplier actually landed inside the tolerance band, which is more useful than the drawing alone when the part has to fit something you already own.
Do you machine parts after heat treatment?
Wire EDM, yes, and that is the normal route for hardened tool steel. Milling after hardening depends on the hardness and the feature. Tell us the target hardness and who is doing the heat treat, because a part that comes back at 60 HRC has a different route from one at 45 HRC.
How do you keep a repeat order the same as the first one?
The fixture, the program and the inspection sheet from the first run are kept together and reused. If your drawing revision changes, tell us the revision number. We will not assume the file you sent last year is still current.
Will you tell me if my design is hard to machine before you quote it?
Yes. Thin walls that will bow, internal corners needing a radius no cutter can produce, threads too close to a wall, and finishes called out after a fit dimension all get raised in the quote email. Whether you change the design is your decision.
Send The Drawing, Get Process, Tolerance And Lead Time Back
A STEP, IGES, or PDF file with the material, quantity, and the tolerances that matter is enough to start. You get a price, a lead time, and manufacturability feedback from a real person, not a bot.
